Commemorate D-Day 80 with a special film screening of
Went the Day Well?
Adapted from a story by Graham Greene,
Went the Day Well?
depicts the greatest nightmare of the British public, that of secret German invasion. Released in 1942, produced by Ealing Studios and directed by Alberto Cavalcanti, who had experienced living under occupation in Europe, the film is unusually frank in its depiction of ruthlessness as a fictional village in southern England is taken over by German paratroopers.
With evocative music by William Walton, and a script full of suspense and surprises,
Went the Day Well?
features an ensemble cast of familiar faces; among them Thora Hird in her first significant role. In 2005 it was named among the ‘100 Greatest War Films’.
