Tess by Ockham’s Razor is an intricate dance story told by the memory of character Tess Durbeyfield as she reflects on her experiences as life being a young woman in the 19 the Century. This circus adaptation of Tess of the D’Urbervilles is a fascinating watch with an important storyline.
The show opens strongly, setting the scene for the rest of the performance. Tess introduces herself, before bringing out her younger self to convey her story. We see many of the struggles of Tess’s life in her youth, this show is aimed for a more mature audience but remains a popular watch.
Even though the story contains a sensitive topic, there is still many light-hearted moments throughout the show that keeps the mood up for the audience. The show received many laughs and wows from everyone watching. Based on a true story, the performance conveys many issues from the time-period that still remain relevant now.
As Tess leads the story with her narration, the ensemble dancers perform mesmerising circus inspired tricks and routines. Large planks of wood are cleverly manipulated to travel the main characters from place to place, adding depth to the story. The tricks performed are fearless and performed so effortlessly which made this element so incredible to watch.
Alongside the circus inspired tricks, the cast take their time to build the sets of the show on the stage as part of the performance. This is an element of a show that I have never seen done before. The set design is simple yet so effective, the permanent set and the adaptive set are both used to its’ full potential with the cast climbing and performing throughout.
The large LED screen at the back of the stage adds so much atmosphere to the performance. As a new phase of Tess’s life commences, it is announced on the screen to make it clear for the audience. This screen changes with the mood of the performance which in combination the ensemble’s movements creates a perfectly portrayed scene.
The show closes with a plot twist in the storyline, bringing the whole story round in a full circle as Tess finally gets justice for herself. After suffering the consequences of these actions, the final scene in the show shows off an impressive circus rope routine from Tess closing her characters story through movement.
Tess by Ockham’s Razor is a breath-taking watch, the skills of the cast were astounding, and the storyline was told beautifully. This show fully deserved the standing ovation it received and left the whole audience stunned.
