New Theatre Royal Portsmouth recently played host to the highly anticipated Elite Dance Industry Week, a transformative event that brought together 60 talented aspiring dancers with seasoned industry professionals. Over the course of four intensive days, participants immersed themselves in a world of learning, growth, and creativity, gaining invaluable insights and honing their skills under the guidance of industry experts.
This exciting event brought together 60 passionate and talented aspiring dancers who were ready to kick, twirl, and leap their way into the spotlight. Over the course of four days, these dancers had the unique opportunity to learn from top industry professionals, pushing their boundaries and learning as much as they could from those whose careers they aspire to have.
The Elite Dance Industry Week was more than just a chance to learn new dance routines. It was an incredible opportunity for aspiring dancers to gain valuable insight into the world of professional dance. They perfected their techniques and applied their skills in an intensive four-day experience, ending in a showcase for family and friends on the main stage.
Those who participated weren’t new to the world of dance, many having taken dance classes since they could walk. The week aimed to give the dancers what they need to take dance to the next level. All dancers were invited to audition back in April to ensure they had what it takes to undertake such an intense week of training. The idea of auditioning was also part of the professional experience, as dancers will have to audition for colleges, universities and professional roles in the future.
The dancers, already comfortable on stage, were even treated to a singing lesson. This was under advice that many on-stage roles require a multitude of performing arts talents. Many dancers already had their specialties, whether it’s contemporary dance, ballet or jazz, but Elite Dance Industry Week covered all disciplines of dance and movement in order to widen the dancers’ horizons and broaden their skillset.
The industry professionals who lent their expertise included West End performers with roles in SIX!, Wicked, The Lion King and Les Misérables, teaching routines and giving tips on West End auditions. They also had guidance from a Mindful Movement coach who taught them the importance of slowing down, listening to and becoming in tune with their own bodies. The dancers were given insight into a broad range of career opportunities as the line-up of professionals was a dream come true for any aspiring dancer.
Dancers were also given the opportunity to have individual portraits taken. Dancers were able to put on their favourite dance costumes, show off their best poses and amazing moves and have them captured by a professional dance photographer and the results were stunning. Not only did these moments capture memories of the week but is the kind of thing that can be used in the dancers’ portfolios going forward.
The event was organised with Lucy Russell who organises Petersfield Dance Festival, Southsea Dance Festival, South Coast Dance Festivals and Southern Dance Class Awards. Lucy was delighted to be part of organising the Elite Dance Industry Week, knowing first hand just how talented the dancers here in the South are.
